RED One experience

Ok here is few stuff nobody will tell you, or you need to find it deeply in REDUSER forum. I will update this every-time I figure out what’s “wrong” with this camera.

- Infrared problem – all blacks goes to purple on this camera, it’s much worst in forest then in open field and gets really bad with use of ND filters. ND.6 and ND.9 and above is the worst combination with RED. But you can’t live without NDs, because the camera is rated as 320ASA. Solution is to buy a Pancro NDs or cheaper solution is to buy Rosco TrueColor filter. ($186) Disadvantage of Rosco is that is only one side coated so it’s very fragile and can scratch easily.

- RED Rails – this is quite good, but if you buy camera, it’s not necessary to buy everything. As the SIDE HANDELS are attached to bottom RODS it’s difficult to extend rods when you changing it with another lens. You always need alankey. Solution is to buy special butterfly bolts or to build new side handle.

- BreakOutBox  - you definetely need this Element technica breakoutbox ($550) for real-normal hardcore shooting environment.

- Timecode. As the camera doesn’t have free run, and this JAM sync is reset every-time the battery is unplug, you need external TC for long projects. Otherwise this will bring you only problems in postproduction. You need Denecke SBT ($1050) or Ambiente Lockit Box ($1200) but maybe new Denecke SB-3 ($550) will work as well.

- HotSwap, ideal due too relative long time booting (>90s) is to have HotSwap battery mount.

- PAL there is no PAL output from camera, so all steadicam or crane or remote handheld (as well underwater?) you need mini HDSDI to SDI transcoder from AJA for wireless transfer of signal.

- Remote trigger. There is inputs for remote triggers. One original CMotion cable is working with C-Motion Wireless Follow Focus. We using it, but you can’t see red-light response on the C-motion.

- Interesting product is ActionCam Steadicam RedEdition ($14000) very affordable steadicam.

One week behind, ten to go…

So we finished one location and we are moving to another. Cameras holding very well, there is some glitches here and there, but overall it’s perfect. I really wanna buy this camera! We jumped on beginning of production to build 16 to 3.1.2 respectively 3.1.5. Unfortunately .5 has problem with some high contrasty scenes with smoke, so RED solved this for us and posted 3.1.6, but that was step in wrong direction and we lost hour of shooting, cos we were forced to flash the .5 firmware back. Now for the next week I have 3.2.1 which looks pretty stable and I tested it. I have a new focus puller on “B” camera, Monday is the day for new production and Wednesday is day for new catering services. Hope all will come better.

Day 4 & 5

So what to write about this days? It’s still little messy, still catching up. Not much hardware problems except issues with wireless focus C-Motion. Seems that is not operating well with 12V at RED. Got Foxx for tmrw shooting, if that will be good, than we will go for it. There was a great storm last 3 days.

Knight’s Kids Day 3

Today was tough day. First we loaded new firmware 3.1.6 to RED to realize that it’s worst then the one before. And lost 30 minutes to downgrade to 3.1.5. The new one should take away some codec errors in specific environment as is smoke with back-light and trees. But the real delay was again somewhere else. So after this we started to shoot really late and some scenes are shot at T1.3! But Alan my FP did marvelously well and majority of shots are in focus! That was hard. Then I started to prepare night shooting. Lucky that I insist on 12kW lamps, otherwise will be much worst. We started to shoot. Around midnight the real horror started. It was raining as I didn’t seen for such a long time. Buckets of water was pured over us. But we are tough folks and we shoot the scene in rain, which was great! Looks awesome. I did little Caravaggio style as I hided the fire behind some rumble. Excellent. So Sunday again.

“Knight’s Kids” Day 1

So I unofficialy rename the TVS to that you can see in topic. Maybe will change it during the shooting when we will get more “nasty” with the TVS.

So NO PROBLEM with RED cameras. Only small glitch is, that our DAS guys have some real time issues with copying all the CF cards to RAID and Laptop and External HDD, when the RAID is the only one working on power. Sometimes when the whole set needs to move, they are unplugged and can’t backup. And we have only 8 CF cards for 2 cameras. So it’s turnaround. But they are really great guys, as it’s completely new to them. Very helpful - thanks Martin and Honza!!! Keep up. Issue was production and lighting today. The first is a mess a little as we struggle with money. And the seconds get lost and are not used to my pace and type of working. But hey it was first day, and there is some two or three nice shots and two nice scenes! And i love working with mirrors, the sun is such a strong lamp and it always looks interesting. Hope we will have more mirrors tmrw.
Small problem was with cable from CMotion Wireless Focus to REDone, it suppose to trigger the camera to run. One cable is fine, but the other just turned the camera off instantly you plugit in. And forgot to tell, that costumes and other fabrics completely black appear at the Panasonic monitor as purple! Will check R3D files tmrw…

Shooting with REDs Day 0

Today we did a zero day of shooting. I just wanted that all of the technology will be put together and solved and tested. The both crew, camera and sound worked very well. Little weak was the loggistic side, but hey it’s first day and nobody is king yet. Cameras had little problem with smoky scene, hope this will not happen again. See ya tmrw with actors!
