So I must say I’m pretty disappointed by this year FAMUFestival, especially by the prices they was giving out. Almost non of the prices felt to the right hands. Today FAMU is about conceptual art and documentary videos with no visual storytelling. The most important stuff is what it is about and if it is a inner voice of the protagonist or author. Unfortunately I didn’t see the winner for best camera and sound, I want to catch that latter, but the winner of best direction and best film of FAMU (in this year it’s two equal winners, both documentaries from Karel Vachek workshop) I saw. I must say I could skip all three films. Best narrative direction got film ”Home Violence (in film studio)” from documentary department,which is personal probe to an ex-boyfriend (director) “who was looking for himself” a ex-girlfriend (actress Marca who is in two worlds) and her new ex-boyfriend who become homosexual after living 6 years with her. All is mostly thru so it’s not a mocumentary and it got price for best narative direction also the main plot is where fiction ends and reality begins. I just don’t understand the logic behind the price giving and disagree with it. At least this was interesting cos I know the two actors. The other two winners of the big price I don’t understand at all. One is about naked (yes, she’s naked most of the time) 30+ years old ugly women making living by working for tabloid magazine, which of course, make her inner self feel horrible. And the second is 10 short films during the year all put together as a kind of diary but without any connection and with just some kind of underline feeling and not a proper filmmaking language. The whole FAMUfest was not about craftsmanship of filmmaking, but that these young people just feel what is right and how to shoot it somehow, and doesn’t matter that doesn’t have any head or heal, or technical quality, just it’s mine contribution to society and that’s what I saw, even it’s a mess. Think it’s obvious this people are inside teared or pulled apart and showing the mess to audience is the right way of our cinema for the future. Cinema Verite is good, but this is too beyond.
